Bali: Beats of Paradise (2018 film)



Bali: Beats of Paradise is a 2018 music documentary film about Balinese gamelan, the traditional ensemble music in Indonesia. Directed by Livi Zheng and writing by Ken Zheng, Its featuring Grammy Award Winning Artist Judith Hill (20 Feet From Stardom) and Indonesian composer Nyoman Wenten. This film screened at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Samuel Goldwyn Theater, Beverly Hills, United States, Wednesday, November 7.

Plot

“Bali: Beats of Paradise” tells the life journey of Nyoman Wenten, a gamelan artist who lives in Los Angeles. Wenten is also known as an ethnomusicology teacher at UCLA and the Herb Alpert School of Music, as well as CalArts School of Music. The film also explores Wenten’s encounter with gamelan since he was a child in Bali, which took him across the globe.

Nyoman Wenten then collaborated with musician Judith Hill, who was the contestant for The Voice and a Grammy-Award winner. Together with Judith Hill, Nyoman Wenten combines gamelan and Balinese dance with funk music in the music “Queen of the Hill”.

“Bali: Beats of Paradise” will begin playing in American theaters starting on November 16.
