It is our responsibility as Global Citizens to create a world where education is a priority for every child, everywhere. Circumstance should not be a barrier to education. Humanitarian emergencies across the world – from Syria to Nigeria, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and beyond – are disrupting the schooling of around 75 million children, more than half of them girls. We can change their story, but the window to do so is narrowing.
As we mark #16Days to end gender based violence, it is critical to recognize the role of education in keeping girls safe by securing their education in crisis-affected areas.
Wars and disasters force girls out of school and make them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse in circumstances where they and their families will do anything to survive or have lost all protection. In some countries, girls in school are specifically targeted by groups like ISIS and Boko Haram because they know that educated women are more empowered.
When emergencies strike – whether conflict or natural disaster – education is a critical part of the first response to save lives as well as rebuild them. Education can provide hope for their future, ensuring they have the mental health needed to build resilience.
Yet our responses to humanitarian emergencies do little to protect girls' right to learn – in fact, last year, less than 2% of all humanitarian aid went to education.
Every year, at least $8.5 billion is needed to provide children affected by crises with quality education. Education Cannot Wait: a Fund for Education in Emergencies has met its target, raising over $170M for it's first year. Now we need your help to raise around $350 million to meet the targets needed for 2018.
