Want to save the world’s coral reefs? Just listen to them, say scientists | 22 Jun 2022 | Stefan Ellerbeck; Senior Writer, Formative Content

Around 32% of all named marine species live in and around coral reefs. Scientists predict up to 90% of coral reefs might disappear by 2050, due to prolonged ocean heat waves. 4 different types of reef habitat:
(1) Healthy,
(2) Degraded,
(3) Mature restored,
(4) and Newly Restored.
Each type of reef generated a different sound, depending on the amount of coral cover and the sea creatures living and feeding in the area. To capture the coral acoustics, Williams and his team made recordings at various sites in the Spermonde Archipelago, off Sulawesi in Indonesia. Sulawesi. It consists of approximately 70 coral islands and was known even to European seafarers in colonial times as a particularly species-rich and productive marine area.

The archipelago covers a land area of approximately 141 km2, and comprises around 50 vegetated islands and 70 unvegetated sand cays,of which 43 in total are named.
