The disease had been formally named MELIOIDOSIS in 1932, and scientists had discovered the bacteria (renamed Burkholderia pseudomallei in 1992) in soil and water throughout South-east Asia, although the disease was found mainly in THAILAND, MYANMAR, CAMBODIA AND LAOS.
